ABOUT THE REGION

The Manly, Mosman, Pittwater and Warringah region, located on Sydney’s north shore is bordered on three sides by water, namely the Pacific Ocean, the Hawkesbury River and Sydney Harbour. By the 1930s, Mosman and Manly were municipalities and Pittwater was part of Warringah Shire and only separated in 1992. These areas ranged from well-established suburbs such as Mosman and Manly (including Fairlight and Balgowlah) to semi-rural Pittwater and Warringah, with small settlements along the coast at Dee Why, Curl Curl, Collaroy, Narrabeen, Mona Vale, Newport and Avalon. Today these suburbs which cover 263.45 sq. km. look very different. It is hard to believe that in the 1930s these areas still had large tracts of bush and vacant land.
