[The Spit] was very narrow, not much more than the existing road wide. All the parkland on the western side  wasn’t there and during the Depression they put a wall in and pumped sand in as a retaining wall …When I got my licence in the late 30s, I was scared stiff driving across the original bridge because it was very narrow.
