The hessian humpies, all out around where Wakehurst Parkway is and Deep Creek, right around the Middle Creek, every bit of vacant ground was taken up with a humpy. Some of them were really tidy people. They’d have lovely little gardens and things, protected with little fences so the bloody rabbits wouldn’t eat their lettuce and things. They could catch fish and eels, there was water. Those humpies were there for years and years and it was the same out at the Governor Philip Park, Palm Beach. In the end a lot of the people that were out there, when the war finished, they stopped out there, they’d let their houses for the duration and they stopped out there. |
