I used to think to live so poorly all your life would be dreadful. A lot of men there [at the Elanora Country Club] were on the dole out of work – and if you couldn’t get a job – then you went looking for golf balls; but I was very good at caddying. I used to be smart about it and got twopence or threepence to caddy a round. That’s where I learned to play golf and… I became quite good at golf and had a handicap of 8… we used to shape clubs out of the oak trees and practice after school in the Salvation Army paddock using jam tins. … that was my salvation.
