I was about ten then, when the Depression was really hitting
hard. That’s when my father was working on the roads, getting these
vouchers for food…Where the Arcadia was… we used to have to
go there, they turned that into a soup kitchen. Being the youngest I had
to go down and take my billy – you had to take your own little paper
bag and they gave you a dipper of soup and four slices of bread –
but it was about an inch thick – so that wasn’t bad. So we
managed on that. I used to see all my school friends lining up for the
